A study, by two of the major contributors to the theory, of the inverse scattering transform and its application to problems of nonlinear dispersive waves that arise in fluid dynamics, plasma physics, nonlinear optics, particle physics, crystal lattice theory, nonlinear circuit theory and other areas. A soliton is a localised pulse-like nonlinear wave that possesses remarkable stability properties. Typically, problems that admit soliton solutions are in the form of evolution equations that describe how some variable or set of variables evolve in time from a given state. The equations may take a variety of forms, for example, PDEs, differential difference equations, partial difference equations, and integrodifferential equations, as well as coupled ODEs of finite order. What is surprising is that, although these problems are nonlinear, the general solution that evolves from almost arbitrary initial data may be obtained without approximation.

Solitons and the Inverse Scattering Transform / Society ~ Simply put, the inverse scattering transform is a nonlinear analog of the Fourier transform used for linear problems. Its value lies in the fact that it allows certain nonlinear problems to be treated by what are essentially linear methods. Chapters 1 and 2 of the book describe in detail the theory of the inverse scattering transform. Chapter 3 discusses alternate methods for these exactly .

Solitons, Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Inverse Scattering ~ Solitons have been of considerable interest to mathematicians since their discovery by Kruskal and Zabusky. This book brings together several aspects of soliton theory currently only available in research papers. Emphasis is given to the multi-dimensional problems arising and includes inverse scattering in multi-dimensions, integrable nonlinear evolution equations in multi-dimensions and the .
Solitons and Inverse Scattering Transform - Fermat ~ Solitons and Inverse Scattering Transform Tuncay Aktosun Abstract. A review of the inverse scattering transform is presented in solving initial-value problems for nonlinear evolution equations such as the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The derivation of such equations is illustrated by using the Lax method and the AKNS method. The inverse scattering problem is outlined for the one-dimensional .
THE INVERSE SCATTERING TRANSFORM AND INTEGRABILITY OF ~ the inverse scattering transform, which among other things can be viewed of as a nonlinear analogue of the Fourier transform. There is much more to the inverse scattering transform than we discuss in this paper. Consideration of one-dimensional periodic problems solvable by this method reveals connections with algebraic geometry and Riemann surfaces. The inverse scattering transfrom is also .
